Download the update data directly to the system from the Internet. An Internet connection is required to update the system using this method. For details about connecting the system to the Internet, see (Settings) > [Network Settings] > [Infrastructure Mode] in this guide.
Download the update data. When connected to the network, the system scans for the latest update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the update data and to start the update. If you do not want to update the system immediately after the download, you can do so later by selecting (Settings) > (System Update) > [Update via Storage Media] to install the update data.
Place the EBOOT file in a folder named UPDATE in /PSP/GAME/ on the PSP memory card or internal memory if you are using a PSP Go. Disconnect from USB mode and view your games list. There will be a new icon for an update. Launch it and follow the directions to update to 6.60 or 6.61 firmware.
While system software updates can be used with consoles from any region, Sony recommends only downloading system software updates released for the region corresponding to the system's place of purchase. System software updates have added various features including a web browser, Adobe Flash Player 6 support, additional codecs for images, audio, and video, PlayStation 3 connectivity, as well as patches against several security exploits, vulnerabilities, and execution of homebrew programs.[2] The battery must be at least 50% charged or else the system will prevent the update from installing. If the power supply is lost while writing to the system software, the console will no longer be able to operate unless the system is booted in service mode or sent to Sony for repair if still under warranty.
The PlayStation Portable comes with a web browser for browsing the Internet. The web browser is a version of the NetFront browser made by Access Co. Ltd. and was released for free with the 2.00 system software update.[4] The browser supports most common web technologies, such as HTTP cookies, forms, CSS, as well as basic JavaScript capabilities.[5]
Furthermore, PSP-2000, PSP-3000, and PSP-N1000 can use the Skype VoIP service starting with system software version 3.90. The service allows Skype calls to be made over Wi-Fi and on the PSP Go over the Bluetooth Modem feature. It is not possible to use the VoIP service on the original PSP-1000 console due to hardware limitations. There also existed other services for the PSP such as the Room for PlayStation Portable, similar to the PlayStation 3's online community-based service known as PlayStation Home.
All legally and illegally obtained content can be played on custom firmware, assuming that it is at the latest version (currently 6.61).During the early days of the PSP hacking scene, it was discovered that firmware 1.00 allowed unsigned code to run. While this firmware only existed on PSP-1000 models from Japan, many users imported these models to run and develop homebrew. An exploit was later discovered in firmware 1.50 that also allowed unsigned code to run. This opened up North American PSP-1000 systems for homebrew. Firmware 1.5 acted as the standard firmware for homebrew until the creation of eLoaders (which use various exploits to launch a homebrew \"menu\"), savegame exploits in games such as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Lumines: Puzzle Fusion and eventually DarkAlex's custom firmware releases, which all allowed PSPs shipped after the 1.51 update's release to run homebrew.
Sony had put significant effort into blocking custom firmware and other third party devices/content from the PSP, but their effort was in vain. In July 2007 Dark_AleX officially stopped his work on the PSP, citing perceived problems with Sony as one of the reasons for his departure,[16] but other custom firmware versions continue to be developed or updated. In 2015, a homebrew tool known as Infinity was developed which allows users to permanently install CFW such as LME or PRO on all PSP models. This tool requires firmware 6.60 or 6.61.[17]
Your PSP firmware controls your system settings, and new versions get released to add features and fix errors and security problems. There are several ways that you can update the firmware on your PSP. If you have a network connection, you can update directly from the PSP itself. Otherwise, you can use a computer or a game disc that comes with update software. If you want to use homebrew software on your PSP, you can install custom firmware.
The PSP uses two 333 MHz MIPS32 R4000 R4k-based CPUs, as a main CPU and Media Engine, a GPU running at 166 MHz, and includes 32 MB main RAM (64 MB on PSP-2000 and later models), and 4 MB embedded DRAM split between the aforementioned GPU and Media Engine.[39] The hardware was originally forced to run more slowly than it was capable of; most games ran at 222 MHz.[40] With firmware update 3.50 on May 31, 2007, however, Sony removed this limit and allowed new games to run at 333 MHz.[41]
The PSP is powered by an 1800 mAh battery (1200 mAh on the 2000 and 3000 models) that provides between about three and six hours of gameplay, between four and five hours of video playback, or between eight and eleven hours of audio playback.[20][42]
To make the unit slimmer, the capacity of the PSP's battery was reduced from 1800 mAh to 1200 mAh in the PSP-2000 and 3000 models. Due to more efficient power use, however, the expected playing time is the same as that of older models. The original high-capacity batteries work on the newer models, giving increased playing time, though the battery cover does not fit. The batteries take about 1.5 hours to charge and last for between four-and-a-half and seven hours depending on factors such as screen brightness settings, the use of WLAN, and volume levels.[43] In March 2008, Sony released the Extended Life Battery Kit in Japan, which included a bulkier 2200 mAh battery with a fitting cover. In Japan, the kit was sold with a specific-colored cover matching the many PSP variations available.[44] The North American kit released in December 2008 was supplied with two new covers; one black and one silver.[45]
In comparison with the PSP-2000, the 3000, marketed in PAL areas as \"PSP Slim & Lite\" or \"PSP Brite\", has an improved LCD screen[57] with an increased color range,[58] five times the contrast ratio,[59] a halved pixel response time, new sub-pixel structure, and anti-reflective technology to reduce outdoor glare. The disc tray, logos, and buttons were all redesigned, and a microphone was added. Games could now be output in either component or composite video using the video-out cable.[60] Some outlets called this model \"a minor upgrade\".[61]
The PSP-3000 was released in North America on October 14, 2008, in Japan on October 16, in Europe on October 17,[62][63] and in Australia on October 23.[64] In its first four days on sale in Japan, the PSP-3000 sold over 141,270 units, according to Famitsu;[65] it sold 267,000 units during October.[66]
The unit is 43% lighter and 56% smaller than the original PSP-1000,[70] and 16% lighter and 35% smaller than the PSP-3000.[74] Its rechargeable battery is not intended to be removed by the user.[75] It has a 3.8-inch (97 mm) 480 272 pixel LCD screen,[76][77] which slides up to reveal the main controls. The overall shape and sliding mechanism are similar to those of Sony's mylo COM-2 Internet device.[78]
The PSP-3000 was made available in piano black, pearl white, mystic silver, radiant red, vibrant blue, spirited green, blossom pink, turquoise green and lilac purple. The limited edition \"Big Boss Pack\" of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker had a camouflage pattern while the God of War: Ghost of Sparta bundle pack included a black-and-red two-toned PSP.[117] The Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy Cosmos & Chaos edition that was released on March 3, 2011, has an Amano artwork as the PSP's face plate.[118]
The PSP runs a custom operating system referred to as the System Software, which can be updated over the Internet, or by loading an update from a Memory Stick or UMD.[121] Sony offers no method for downgrading such software.
While System Software updates can be used with consoles from any region,[122] Sony recommends only downloading updates released for the model's region. System Software updates have added many features, including a web browser, Adobe Flash support, additional codecs for various media, PlayStation 3 (PS3) connectivity, and patches against security exploits and the execution of homebrew programs.[121] The most recent version, numbered 6.61, was released on January 15, 2015.
The PSP Internet Browser is a version of the NetFront browser and came with the system via the 2.00 update.[123] The browser supports most common web technologies, such as HTTP cookies, forms, CSS, and basic JavaScript.[124] It features basic tabbed browsing and has a maximum of three tabs.[125]
The SensMe software, which had already existed on some Walkman music players and Sony Ericsson handsets, was added to the PSP through a software update in 2009. It is a music analyser that reads music files stored on the PSP and categorises them into \"channels\" representing moods and creates automatic playlists from it.[136][137] The PSP has support for the playback of MP3 and ATRAC audio files,[138] as well as WMA since firmware version 2.60.[139]
In late 2004, Sony released a series of PSP demo games, including Duck In Water, world/ball, Harmonic City, and Luga City.[166] Demos for commercial PSP games could be downloaded and booted directly from a Memory Stick.[167] Demos were sometimes issued in UMD format and mailed out or given to customers at retail outlets.[168] In addition, several older PlayStation games were re-released; these can be played on the PSP using emulation. As of 2008[update], this feature could be officially accessed through the PlayStation Network service for PlayStation 3, PSP, PlayStation Vita (or PlayStation TV), or a personal computer.[169] Emulation of the PSP is well-developed; one of the first emulators was JPCSP, which run on Java.[170] PPSSPP is currently the fastest and most compatible PSP emulator; it supports all major games.[171] 59ce067264
